IRRIGATION

There are certain days, during heat waves for instance, when extra watering time is required. At that time, these instructions are to be followed: "When temperatures exceed 96 degrees, water your yard for one cycle to replace the water it lost through transpiration". This guideline helps to protect your yard during heat waves while it cools your nerves-You don't need to hit the panic button and overwater. Adding minutes to your watering time wastes less water than adding days.

Have you ever wondered why the watering times in the schedule are always set for 3 intervals? Splitting the watering times into 3 well spaced intervals simulates a long slow rain, which in the end, allows the ground to get saturated. Watering for 10-15 min. every other day, is like simulating a downpour. There's not enough saturation time and the plants appear to be wet on the surface, but in most cases are bone dry down deep.

Water the 1st interval at 1:00 A.M., the 2nd interval at 3:00 A.M. and the 3rd interval at 5:00 A.M. This will help keep runoff to a minimum. Watering for 30 minutes straight causes half the water to run down the driveway and into a storm drain after the first 15 minutes. Giving the soil time to drink the water allows it time to soak into the deeper root systems. During the summer months this is especially important because more saturation means less watering.

Irrigating during the wee morning hours is preferred over watering during the heat of the day because sunlight evaporates faster than moonlight. Sunlight causes water droplets to turn into tiny magnifying glasses that may cause leaf burn.

Choose a schedule and set your clock accordingly.

Schedule A is for those who wish to continue to conserve water.

Schedule B is for those who want to conserve water, but feel they need to water a little more. We recommend using Schedule B for the next 30 days. If, after 30 days the temperatures are above normal, then continue to use this schedule.

Split your watering time into thirds.

Water the 1st interval at 1:00 A.M.,
the 2nd interval at 3:00 A.M. and
the 3rd interval at 5:00 Am.

Remember when you divide your watering time into thirds, leave a 2 hour minimum dryout period in between the intervals. Similarly, when you divide your watering time in half, then the recommended dryout period in between the 2 intervals is 4 hrs.
